Anohana the Movie, which was
released countrywide in Japan on Aug. 31, continues to have
record-breaking box office earnings. The movie was released in 64
theaters to an onslaught of enthusiastic fans and has become a big hit.
On Sept. 11, 12 days after its release, the movie broke through the 500
million yen box office milestone, with more than 38,000 tickets sold.
For such a small-scale release, these numbers are indeed unusual.
The movie came in third during its opening weekend behind Hayao Miyazaki’s newest film The Wind Rises (distributed by Toho and released in 454 theaters) and Man of Steel (distributed by Warner Bros. and released in 610 theaters). The opening weekend totals for the movie were 161,225 tickets sold, 198,177,700 yen in box office revenue, and a screen average of 3,096,527 yen. This momentum continued into its second weekend, where it ranked fourth behind The Wind Rises, Captain Harlock, and Man of Steel. However, it remained No. 1 in screen average, totaling 1,686,188 yen. The phenomenon of this moving series continues. Even more big numbers are forecast as the movie continues its theatrical run, and we look forward to seeing just how far it can go.
